After completing his undergraduate education at The University of Florida, Dr. Weiss attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University. Following an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Michigan State University, Dr. Weiss returned home to South Florida where he joined a private practice in Fort Lauderdale. Along with several partners, Dr. Weiss expanded the practice to include 4 offices and an ambulatory surgery center. There he established himself as a leading expert in the field of Orthopedics.
Dr. Weiss practiced Orthopedic Surgery for over 15 years in South Florida. During that time, he was invited back to his alma mater, Nova Southeastern University as an Assistant Professor in Orthopedic Surgery, teaching classes on campus to the second year medical students, mentoring students and residents and receiving several distinguished faculty awards. In 2001 he was awarded the title of Fellow in the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics for exemplary care, service and contribution to the specialty. He also served as president of the Broward County Orthopedic Society and served on the Board of Trustees for the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association.
In 2006, Dr. Weiss was recruited to work for Laser Spine Institute in Tampa. The professor once again became the student and completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. In short order, Dr. Weiss was named the Chief of Surgery and lead the expansion of Laser Spine Institute. In 2011, he was promoted to Chairman of the Department of Surgery. In this leadership role, he has helped Laser Spine Institute become the national leader in minimally invasive spine surgery opening seven centers throughout the United States.
In addition to continuing to operate a full surgery schedule, Dr. Weiss directs and oversees the organization’s distinguished fellowship program. Training surgeons to perform minimally invasive spine procedures that have made the institute a nationally recognized leader in outpatient spine surgery is just one of many of Dr. Weiss’ achievements.
He has served on the Pain Management Advisory Board for General Electric Healthcare and was a recent appointee to the technical panel for the AAAHC. There, Dr. Weiss’ expertise was sought to develop specialty certification standards and criteria for outpatient spine and total joint procedures in an ambulatory setting.
Dr. Weiss regularly lectures at national society meetings as well as leading and organizing a number of national conferences.
In collaboration with both Orthopedic and Neurosurgical Spine specialists, Dr. Weiss is involved in a number of research efforts and articles for publication.
He is also credited with originating the Backronym for LASER- Less Aggressive Surgery Exceptional Results.
Dr. Weiss is a passionate and caring physician and he remains excited and motivated to further the advancement of Orthopedic Surgery, particularly minimally invasive spine surgery and the progression and future of surgery in the ambulatory setting.
